Global study of salmon shows: ‘Sustainable’ food isn’t so sustainable

November 30th, 2009 by Editor

Popular thinking about how to improve food systems often misses the point, according to the results of a three-year global study of salmon production systems. Rather than pushing for organic or land-based production, or worrying about simple metrics such as “food miles,” the study finds that the world can achieve greater environmental benefits by focusing on improvements production and distribution.

Waterpleinen: Recreating Rain Reserviors as Dynamic Public Parks

November 30th, 2009 by Editor

sustainable design, green design, public space, green architecture, water, Waterpleinen by Floria Boer and Marco Vermeulen

For cities that are settled below sea level, dealing with copious amounts of rainfall year round can be a destructive challenge. But as theRoyal Dutch Meteorological Institutepredicts, Rotterdam has an even damper outlook – over the next century rainfall in the area is expected to increase by5%with an increase in intensity of10%. Rather than pouring heaps of money into expanding the sewer systems, officials have decided to turn to designersFlorian BoerandMarco Vermeulen. In a project called “Waterpleinen” the pair have developed a much less costly and uncomplicated alternative that combines a vivid public space with a place for water collection!

Sunday Times Reveals Some Eco-Celeb Shame

November 30th, 2009 by Editor

John385_650564a-1

The UK’s Sunday Times Online posted an articlethis weekend on some of the raging eco-hypocrisy rampant in Hollywood these days. While the Euro-critics love to take down US celebrities there is something to be said for keeping it real.

Sheryl Crow, John Travolta, Trudie Styler, Chris Martin, Harrison Fordand others are taken to task for not walking their talk. Among the egregious offenses are Crow’s 30 person entourage which followed behindherbiodiesel tour bus in 13 gas-powered vehicles as well asAl Gore’sbill for heating his indoor swimming pool. Several celebs were also outed for flying a variety of hairstylists and chefs halfway across the world for single events.

Perhaps my favorite quote was fromChris Martinabout his daughter: “As she gets older, hopefully she’ll come and see us when she wants. I always thought it’d be cool to be in school and say, ‘I’m not coming in today — I’m off to Costa Rica to see my dad play.’ I do think that wins you a few points.” According to the Times, Martin did point out that he paid for the planting of mango trees to offset the carbon emissions of his tours and flights home. I’m guessing that’s A LOT of mangoes…on someone else’s land.

Promoting extravagant air travel AND skipping school? Yikes.

Check outthe full articlefor some more revelations as well as a thumbs up for the lifestyles ofEd Begley Jr. andWoody Harrelson.

All of these folks have done great things for a variety of causes and it’s great when public figures bring attention to important issues.  But it’s even better when their lives can truly reflect their intentions.

Online Sunsets: A Virtual Dusk and Dawn for the Internet Addicted

November 29th, 2009 by Editor

Whitney Museum Virtual Sunrise, ecoarttech, whitney, sunrise, sunset, faux sunset, new york city, internet sunset

In this modern age of light pollution, cities that never sleep, 24 hour streaming TV andaddictive RSS feeds, regulating one’s owncircadian rhythmscan be, well…difficult. And for those of us who have a computer strapped to our torsos at all times, watching a sunrise or sunset (somewhere other than Youtube) is a luxury that we are lucky to experience once in a blue moon. Luckily, theWhitney Museum of Arthas developed a way for us to check out more sunsets – on their website. That’s right –EcoArtTech’s Cary Peppermint and Christine Nadir have programmed the WMA site to dim and illuminate, corresponding withNew York’s real-life cycles of light.

The Green Quote: Deepak Chopra On The “Green” White House Dinner

November 29th, 2009 by Editor

Deepak Chopra“Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelson, brought in from New York and his sophisticated roost at Aquavit, offered a wonderful selection of vegetarian dishes like chick pea and okra dahl, another stroke of cultural empathy (perhaps the most powerful one of the evening, given the Indian nostalgia for the food we were raised on). There was room for regional American foods like collard greens and cornbread (found in India, too — did they know?) It was all prepared in a way that Dr. Dean Ornish would approve of, and aligned to Michelle Obama’s message of sustainability. The Obama administration actually understands that future prosperity must come through a green economy, not in spite of it.”

-Deepak Chopraon the “green” nature of the The White House’s state dinner, its first of the new administration, which honored Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. From his blog atIntent.com.
