How can accidental captures of loggerhead turtles be reduced?

February 26th, 2010 by Editor

Scientists have studied interactions between the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and fishing gear such as longline hooks used at the water surface, mass beachings, and the effects of climate change on these animals. In order to reduce captures of this marine species without causing economic losses for fishermen, the scientists are proposing that fishing in the summer should only be carried out by night and in areas more than 35 nautical miles from land.

Green Covered Taipei Music Center by Mario Bellini Architects, taiper pop music center, mario bellini architects, green design, eco design, sustainable design, green architecture

We’re totally intrigued by thispop music center for Taipeiand its striking resemblance to a rolling green hill. Conceived by Italian firmMario Bellini Architects, the design is “a single body wrapped in a plastic ‘mantle plant’,” according to our friends atDesignboom. While we aren’t sure how sustainable this plastic ‘mantle plant’ is, or evenwhatit is for that matter, we were taken with the creativelandscapingand creation of an exciting outdoor public area for the people of the Taipei. The proposed structure would also have glass passageways, letting visitors look out onto the city. If anyone has any more information about the eco-features of this center, we’d love to hear them – so share your thoughts in the comments below.

Streets and public rights-of-way make up a whopping 25% ofSan Francisco’stotal land area–more land than all of the city’s parks combined. Many of the streets are wider than necessary or contain wasted space, and that’s where thePavement to Parksinitiative comes in. The recently-launched program puts plazas and seating areas in excess roadways by painting over the asphalt, installing tables and chairs, and putting up protective barriers.

Is Hot-To-Trot Madonna Really a Material (Farm) Girl At Heart?

February 26th, 2010 by Editor

madonna

madonna, farmJust a little over one year following her divorce fromLock Stock and Two Smoking BarrelsdirectorGuy Ritchie,Madonnahas made quite a few significant adjustments to her lifestyle. In addition to abandoning theBritishcountryside once and for all in favor of the slightly sunnier locale ofNew York City, the 51-year-old used her clout withWarnersmusic execs to help her 22 year old Brazilian-born boy toyscore a record dealand has also justcompleted her latest collection of tunesentitled “Tick Tock Fuzzy Bubble” which are slated to be released in just a few months.

Amid all of these ch-ch-ch-changes,The Postreports that the cultural fashion and music icon has purchased a total of 50 acres of farmland in Long Island’s cushy Bridgehampton area for what amounts to a cool $7 million — $5 million for former ownerKelly Klein’s 26 acre Wild Ocean Farm and most recently $2 million for the adjacent 23 acre parcel located at 10 Mitchells Lane. Zoned specifically as agricultural land,Madonnawon’t be able to build on it, but that’s probablyfine by herconsidering her unabashed love for the equestrian arts. She apparently loves riding her two horsesBorisandSportsfield Silver Liningso much that sherelocated the British born animalsto the states many months prior to the end of her marriage. Clearly, they now have cool new digs in which to kick up their heels.

The former Material Girl may have hefty financial clout and endless buying power, but at least she’s doing something really worthwhile with all of that money. She’s established herself as aMalawi activist of sorts, working on behalf of impoverished orphans to improve their lives, even going as far as toadopt two childrenfrom the African nation herself.  The well-intentioned singer recently received a bit of unwelcome press earlier this month in response to the fact that her proposed Malawian girls school is going to displace 200 Blantyre villagers as per the local government’s request.Madonna tried to make amendsto the current residents by offering them financial compensation of approximately $115,000, but for the moment, the majority of them are refusing to move.

In spite of this unfortunate setback, Madonna seems to think beyond her own needs as Ecorazzi has continually discovered with so many of the other celebrities we’ve reported on. In this world of a million and one problems, it is definitely encouraging to read about the real-world philanthropic and eco-efforts of people who are blessed with good fortune and public interest. May Madonna and her horses enjoy a reprieve from the spotlight and a place to commune with the simple pleasures of Mother Nature.

Apple shareholders gathered at the company’s Cupertino headquarters on Thursday. In addition to addressing financial issues, the discussion at this year’s annual shareholder meeting focused largely on Apple’s environmental record and policies.

As the meeting got underway, the tone took an unexpected turn as harsh comments were directed at board memberAl Gorewho was seated in the first row.

CNET reportsthat Apple shareholder Shelton Ehrlich took to the microphone and began railing against the re-election of Gore to the board. Ehrlich said Gore “has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted. If his advice he gives to Apple is as faulty as his views on the environment then he doesn’t need to be re-elected.”

Several additional commenters came to the aid of the divisive former Vice President and endorsed his position on Apple’s Board of Directors.

Al Goredid not respond directly to any of the comments and, in the end, was re-elected with the rest of the board members according to preliminary results.

Green Surprises at Apple’s Shareholder Meeting

February 26th, 2010 by Editor

Rather than the usual two-minute forum on green topics at Apple’s annual meeting, today’s gathering in Cupertino focused on environmental issues like never before — although the company still has a ways to go to prove its commitment to the planet.
