Being cutting edge infashionmeans creating hot new looks that will get heads to turn. Here is one designer who’s taking this idea to a whole new level by branching out into a frontier you’d never expect to see a fashionista. With a little help of a microbial brew of yeast, bacteria, and several cups of sweetened green tea, U.K. designerSuzanne Leeis creating “fabric” from bacteria! Designed for life by life, this pulsating concoction brings forth fibers that will sprout and propagate, eventually resulting in thin, wet sheets of bacterial cellulose that can be molded into a dress form. What’s left is a canvas that can be bleached or even stained with fruit and vegetable dyes.

Bacterial genes that improve plant growth by 40% identified

May 14th, 2010 by Editor

To find out what makes microbe-plant interactions “tick,” scientists decoded the genome of a plant-dwelling microbe they’d shown could increase plant growth by 40 percent. The work could move the approach of using bacteria as growth-promoting agents one step closer to implementation for improved agriculture and biofuel production.

Production of chemicals from wood waste made more environmentally-friendly and cheaper

March 10th, 2010 by Editor

Researchers have discovered that the bacterium Cupriavidus basilensis breaks down harmful by-products which are produced when sugars are released from wood. They also managed to incorporate the degradation process in bacteria which are in common industrial use. This breakthrough does away with the need to resort to costly and environmentally unfriendly methods for removing by-products, thereby boosting the appeal of waste wood as a sustainable resource for biochemicals and biofuels.
