Johnny Depphas lost his bid to turn a London school teacher’s book about climate change into a movie.Saci Lloydchose a UK production company to filmThe Carbon Diariesover Depp’s film-making company, Infinitum Nihil.
The Carbon Diaries 2015is a futuristic story set in London about one girl’s struggles in a world affected by climate change. The heroine of the story, 16-year-old Laura Brown, documents life in Great Britain after it became the first country to try carbon rationing. The book’s sequelThe Carbon Diaries 2017picks up the story two years later as the government is forced to tighten its grips on carbon rationing. Similar toHarry Potter, Laura Brown has developed a cult-like following among teenagers.
Depp was in negotiations to produce the film but was turned down because Lloyd wanted the film to be set in the UK rather than the US. “Much as I loveJohnny Deppand it was a wrench, it was a ‘maybe later, Jonny,’” said Lloyd. “These books are really about London. It’s a heightened reality, but the idea is it’s close to things that could really happen.”
