February 16th, 2010 by Editor

The World Is Definitely Enough For Eco-Activist Pierce BrosnanHardly turned off by the extreme environmentalist label that the public continues to place on him,Pierce Brosnan– who has made an indelible mark on the small and big screens in such blockbuster fare as multipleJames Bondflicks and the upcomingThomas Crowne Affair 2– has continued to fight the good eco-fight throughout the better part of his adult life.  His support for environmental matters has spanned several decades, whether with his involvement in 1990sGreenpeacenuclear disarmament news conferences and his efforts to prevent a salt factory from being erected in Baja California Sur’sSan Ignacio Lagoonor his successful campaigning which prevented a natural gas facility from being constructed offMalibu’s coastline.

Along with his wifeKeely Shaye, the 56 year olds’ dedication to matters of the earth has remained strong and determined – in fact, the couplehave reportedly contributed well over $1 million to worthy eco-causes and both were even inducted into Chicago’sEnvironmental Hall of Fameback in 2008. Among their most favored projects are protecting marine life, conserving wetlands, pursuing clean air and water campaigns and partnering with theNatural Resources Defense Council(NRDC)to prevent Navy sonar systems from being deployedsince they are notorious for pushing already endangered seafaring creatures species over the brink into extinction.

To his own credit, the Irish-born actor – a recipient of the 2007Goldene Kamera Awardfor his environmental work — also holds a position onOceana’s Ocean Council, is a member of theSea Shepherd’s Board of Advisors and has been a long-termUNICEF Irelandambassador.

Appearing in the new film “The Ghost Writer,”Brosnan– who portrays former British Prime MinisterAdam Lang– had a lot of time to wax poetic on what it might be like to take the world by storm as a political figure. In addition to rewarding educational professionals with well-deserved financial compensation, he said that he would continue to “fight for the forests and the oceans.”When can we nominate him for reals?

Forest Park Bar Pulls Cruel ‘Lobster Zone’ Machine

February 5th, 2010 by Editor

lobster

lobsternoWe’re happy to report that Doc Ryan’s in Chicago has removed the ‘Lobster Zone’ claw game!

The bar came under pressure from animal rights organization PETAearlier this week over the game— which has players attempt to capture live lobsters with a claw. Snag one, and the unlucky crustacean is sent to its doom in the kitchen. Besides the end result of being boiled alive, animals trapped in Lobster Zone machines are given no food and are sometimes injured by the claw.

After talking with a local PETA activist, the owner of Doc Ryan’s, Brian Sullivan, decided within 24 hours to remove the Lobster Zone machine. Sullivan says that he is an animal lover and that he would never want to use a machine that tortures animals. Doc Ryan’s has a veggie burger on the menu and is open to including additional vegan options.

“PETA and lobsters thank Doc Ryan’s for doing the right thing and ending a game in which lobsters were exploited,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “The pub’s decision also makes good business sense because more and more people are choosing to patronize places that reject cruelty.”

According to a release, PETA plans on sending Sullivan flowers as gratitude for the compassionate decision.
