The Green Quote: Pete Wentz Calls For Cooperation In The Gulf

June 29th, 2010 by Editor

“We need to see cooperation now and holding the right people accountable later. Everyday more and more oil spills, the problem is looming and pointing fingers does nothing to stop it. We, the public, need to see pictures, hear testimonials, we need to hear from scientists and experts in the field — there needs to be more clarity. We need to focus on prevention — this isn’t the first time a severe spill has hit us, let’s make it the last. This is not just about the gulf but our entire nation and ecosystem — animals are dying, people are losing their livelihoods.”

- MusicianPete Wentzdiscussing the importance of cooperation and teamwork in dealing with the Golf coast oil spill onThe Huffington Post. We’re happy to see Pete speaking up about this important issue and agree that it’s time for all hands to be on deck! Steven Spielberg To Bring Time Travel And Dinosaurs To Fox Lineup With ‘Terra Nova’

June 9th, 2010 by Editor

terranovath

Executive producersSteven Spielberg,Peter Chernin,Brannon Braga(24,Star Trek: Enterprise) andDavid Fury(Lost,Buffy the Vampire Slayer)have teamed up to create an epic prehistoric adventure that follows a regular family as they time travel to Prehistoric Earth to save mankind.

The tv series,Terra Nova, centers around the Shannon family from the year 2149. The world they live in is overcrowded and overpolluted—most of the plant and animal life is extinct. Seeing no way to reverse the planet’s damage created by humans, a group of scientists open a space-time continuum portal that leads to a time 150 million years in the past. The family joins the settlers in Terra Nova, giving them a second chance for civilization.

The new world offers blue skies, abundant vegetation, and fresh beginnings for the inhabitants.

But before you think everything will be perfect in Terra Nova, Fox shared this tidbit: “These adventurers soon discover that this healthy, vibrant world is not as idyllic as it initially appears. The areas surrounding Terra Nova are filled with dangerous dinosaurs, and other prehistoric threats, as well as external forces that may be intent on destroying this new world before it begins. But perhaps even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls is the Shannons’ realization that something sinister may be happening insideTerra Novaas not everyone on this mission has the same intentions of how best to save mankind.”

Terra Novais set to debut on Fox in Spring of 2011.  According toSFF Media, each episode will cost $4 million to produce.

How Kevin Costner Earned The Attention Of BP

June 4th, 2010 by Editor

Over the more than 40 days the oil spill disaster has been depressing our world, BP has received a mountain of suggestions on how best to clean up the mess. Of those, only a few have made it past the suggestion box, frustrating many who claim (and some who probably do) to have genuinely innovative solutions to offer.

Needless to say, it’s been a select group making it through. Even JamesMotherF–kingCameron expressed his anger at being shot down — probably the one time sinceAvatarhit the scene that the director hasn’t been ushered to the front of the line.

So you have to wonder howKevin Costner, an actor most memorable for his movie bombs as much as his successes, managed to soar above the fray and actually attract support from BP for his oil filtration device.According to a little investigating byBusiness Weekly, it had less to do with his celebrity (though the name dropping probably helped a bit) and more with his business acumen, foresight, and industry connections.

First off, Costner’s involvement in oil filtration technology is not something he’s casually dabbled in. Ever since he bought the design for his centrifuge system from the Department of Energy some 15 years ago, he’s been working to perfect it. At the time, the DOE’s device just wasn’t working and Costner, inspired to create something that could help avoid the mess caused by the Exxon-Valdez, offered to take it to the next level. Together with his brother Dan, Costner started CINC (Costner Industries Nevada Corp) to develop the technology; spending some $26 million of his own money in the process to make it a reality. They later launched Ocean Therapy Solutions to front the tech.

Over the course of the last decade, the actor presented his technology at oil industry-related conferences; most notably the Offshore Technology Conference somewhere around 2000. It was at that presentation that a number of BP employees witnessed Costner’s centrifuge demo; leading to the “oh yea, I remember that…” moment last month when the company was angling for ideas.

But first they needed a bit of reminding, which is where Costner scored big in Billy Nunngesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, a governmental district in coastal Louisiana. John Houghtaling, CEO of Ocean Therapy Solutions contacted Nunngesser, who remembered the presentation, and then sent a letter on Costner’s behalf to Doug Suttles, BP’s chief operating officer for exploration and production. The rest is history — and now Costner and his team are preparing to deploy his large centrifuges in deep water with the help of BP — and hopefully, to the benefit of the ecosystem.

The only hitch is that Costner’s tech has not been certified by United States Coast Guard regulations, as its purity levels for the discharge of water are apparently high above legal requirements. Time will tell if the rules are bent in an effort to clean up the water sooner than later.

‘Field Of Dreams’ Farm Up For Sale

May 13th, 2010 by Editor

field of dreams

On the same day we write aboutKevin Costnerannouncinghe’s got some cool invention to to help clean up the Gulf coast oil spill, along comes news that the farm and baseball field fromField of Dreamsis up for sale. Coincidence? Sheer lunacy? Both?

The 193-acre tract has been in the family of Don and Becky Lansing for more than 100 years — but the couple says the time has come for them to move on. “We love the land and the field, but it is time for us to head to the locker room,” said Beckyto theDeMoines Register.  She added “we are getting up there in years and it is time to think about retirement.”

After Universal Studios selected the corn fields on the farm as the site for its academy award nominated film in 1989, the place became an instant tourist draw; with an estimate 65,000 people annual making the baseball pilgrimage. According to the listing, the package includes the site of the movie, with the baseball diamond; a two-bedroom, 1.5 bath house with the familiar front porch; and six outbuildings.

The family isn’t exactly sure who might be interested in the spot — but real estate agent Ken Sanders, himself a former professional baseball player, thinks any number of happy endings exist. “It would be easy to guess a baseball player, a movie buff or even someone from the film’s cast,” Sanders said. “But the movie’s reach has been so widespread, potential buyers don’t necessarily fall within those demographics. It could end up being a non-profit organization, a land trust or a foreign investor. We might all be surprised.”

We’d love to see a land trust step in and preserve the spot — but with a sale price that’s easily expected to top $1 million (per acre values are close to $5K in the county), there would have to be some serious baseball buffs involved with the fundraising. But hey, a guy can dream, right?

World’s Oldest Beehive Found Hidden In ‘Da Vinci Code’ Chapel

May 12th, 2010 by Editor

beehive old

Yet another interesting secret about Scotland’s Roslyn Chapel has been discovered — but this time, it has more to do with honey than anything related to the Knights Templar.

The 650-year-old church, featured prominently in the book and movieThe Da Vinci Code, has been undergoing restoration — thanks in large part to a dramatic increase in tourism as a result of the film. While working on a pair of pinnacles, architects found hidden inside what’s believed to be the oldest man-made stone beehives ever discovered. From the article,

The only clues were flowers carved into the pinnacles — with holes through which the bees could enter and exit. “We had no idea they were there,” said Mitchell. “The chapel has so many elaborate pinnacles, but we could not know what was going on behind. The two pinnacles are on the east gable side, and there was no outward sign that the hives were there other than the flower. The hives, measuring about 650mm high and 40mm in diameter, had the remains of honeycomb within them, although it is thought they have not been occupied for a decade.

The hives have now been fully restored — and officials are hopeful that the bees may return. That, or they may artificially introduce a package into at least one of the pinnacles. We just think it’s pretty damn cool that they were there to begin with.

Exclusive: Rainforest Action Network Raises Funds And Awareness At NYC Bash

May 4th, 2010 by Editor

We all like protecting the rainforest, right? WellRainforest Action Networkdoesn’t just like it…they’re totally obsessed with it.

Last Thursday, I got the chance to attend the organization’s 25th Anniversary New York Benefit at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Besides enjoying delicious drinks and live music, guests also participated in an action-packed live auction, with prizes like: two tickets to the world premiere ofSex and the City 2in NYC, 3 nights in the Penthouse Suite at Hotel Plaza Athenee and limo transport to and from the premiere; a dinner date in Manhattan with Chris Noth; and a Nimble Wellness Package, including one month of classes, five personal training sessions and an exclusive buddy workout with Chris Noth and his personal trainer.

I caught up with Noth, who hosted the event, to find out more about why he supports this hard-working organization.

“Rainforest Action Network is an organization that does so much with so little and I want to give them more,” said Chris. “I feel that their particular brand of activism is profoundly needed right now. We all have to have the courage of our convictions about green energy and where big corporations and banks are putting their money. We have to move fast because there’s not much time left.”

Rainforest Action Network Acting Executive DirectorBecky Tarbottonalso believes that now is the time for action.

“One of things that RAN really specializes in is giving people the ability to take action and raise their voices,” says Tarbotton. “People can take action at home by recycling, by driving a hybrid car, by making sure they’re using sustainable products; but most importantly we need to shift our economy. We have to encourage businesses to do well by doing good and RAN specializes in tackling corporations that are destroying forests and threatening indigenous people’s rights. We’re fearless in doing that and we love helping people get involved.”

Well, you heard the nice lady…it’s time to get involved, kids! To learn more about how you can lend a hand, visitRAN.org. Let’s safe some forests!

Icelandic Volcano Attempts To Trap David Attenborough In Arctic

April 17th, 2010 by Editor

attenborough

attenboroughLike many other inconvenienced travelers stuck in foreign locales due to Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupting, naturalistSir David Attenboroughand hisFrozen Planetcrew recently became stranded. What made their situation a bit different is that they were filming in the freezing Arctic Circle.

Thankfully, Attenborough, who is well-known for his awesome nature series narration, is today doing well holed up in a luxury hotel in Norway. However, for a short time, the BBC were deeply concerned the whole thing was about to turn deadly.

Fromthe Daily Mail,

Sir David had taken a private plane to an isolated area of the Arctic to film scenes of melting ice caps. But following Wednesday’s eruption, the pilot had been refused permission to fly until the cloud of ash cleared. BBC bosses were concerned Mr Attenborough and his crew would run out of supplies of food and water if the crisis continued.

An insider said: ‘David is an extremely seasoned adventurer and has come up against plenty of adversity in his time. But he and the crew are concerned about the current situation because they are stranded in such a cold and inhospitable place.’

Before things went to hell, Attenborough did have the opportunity to fulfill one boyhood dream. At the age of 83, he reached the North Pole just six weeks after reaching the South.
