olivia wilde

With her striking blue eyes and impossibly flawless good looks, it’s no surprise thatOlivia Wilde– who made an indelible mark as Alex Kelly onThe O.C.and Dr. Remy Hadley onHouse– was ranked the number one hottie in 2009 on Maxim’s annual superficial roundup of lovely ladies in today’s pop culture consciousness andPETA’s sexiest vegetarianalongside ofBiggest Losertrainer,Bob Harper.

Good looks and acting chops aside, the Irish-American who –sorry guys, is happily wed to an Italian prince (who also happens to helm documentaries AND play wickedly swoon-worthy flamenco guitar) – hasfar more going onas is evidenced by hercharitable efforts, vegan leaningsand now, her newWilde Thingswebsite.

One look at her latest project makes it clear thatWildeis intent on spreading the word about all things good, green and inspiring in the world, such asgiving props to TOMS shoesfor their uniquely charitable Buy One Get One program, discussing how proceeds fromShepard Fairey’s latest “LOVE UNITES, DEFEND EQUALITY” posterswere used to fight Proposition 8 and even earmarking one entire subgroup tothe topic of veganism, which she says makes her “way happier “ and “about a thousand times more energetic.”

Among her favorite vegan finds are everyone’s divine summer indulgenceLuna & Larry’s Organic Coconut Blisswhich the 26 year old admits she hugs in the freezer (particularly when it’s the Dark Chocolate variety) andAlicia Silverstone’s recipefor addictive Rice Krispie Treats made with brown crisped rice and natural nut butter.

PETA Offers Gore Dating Advice, Says He Should Go Vegan To Score

June 10th, 2010 by Editor

al gore

al gore, tipper gore

PETA has become the latest to comment onAl Gore’sseparation from his wifeTipper— and not surprisingly, they’re urging the former VP to go vegan as a way to lose weight and rekindle his love life with the ladies.

In a letter to Gore, PETA PresidentIngrid Newkirkwrites,

“You are already aware of the environmental damage caused by animal agriculture, and you recently stated that you are reducing your meat consumption. This is a small but important step. Now that you’re single again and presumably considering dating, you may also be looking for a way to slim down. May we recommend kicking the meatandmilk habit entirely and going vegan, which is not only one of the best ways to fight climate change but is also one of the best ways to shed unwanted pounds?”

Newkirk goes on to praise the various benefits and related studies showing how going vegan can improve health. She ends it with this nice little zinger:

“Of course, this is not news to you. Live Earth, the terrific organization that you cofounded, has stated in its handbook that “refusing meat” is the “single most effective thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.”

USA Today Names Vegan Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek ‘Athlete Of The Week’

May 20th, 2010 by Editor

We told you theNew York Times was crazy about him. We told you heset an American record. Now, we’re excited to report that USA Today has awarded a special honor. Who are we talking about? Only vegan ultramarathonerScott Jurek.

After winning a silver medal at the World 24-hour Run Championships in Brive, France and running over 165.7 miles over 24 hours, the famous paper hasofficially named himUSA TODAY’s athlete of the week. Woo!

While training, Jurek consumes a whopping 5,000-8,000 plant-based calories a day.

“The whole issue,” he told theNew York Times, “is exactly that: getting enough calories. The first thing to worry about isn’t so much what you eat, but how much you eat. You have to take the time to sit at the table and make sure your calorie count is high enough. And when you’re a vegan, to increase your calories as you increase training you need more food. This isn’t an elimination diet but an inclusion diet.”

Hell yeah! Keep up the great work, Scott!

Lea Michele’s Vegan Diet No More?

May 6th, 2010 by Editor

Just a couple months ago,Ecorazzi reportedthat Lea Michele, star of the popular television showGlee, was in love with her vegan diet.

“I’m a vegan,” Lea toldOK!. “It makes me feel really good and bright. You need a lot of energy to play spunky Rachel Berry, so I’ve tried a lot of different things — and so far, this is working.”

ButAsosmagazineis now reporting something different! The magazine claims that Lea is currently a “macrobiotic vegan,” but plans to reintroduce fish into her diet. Wait a tick!

We hope Lea read the “Chicago Sun Times” articlethat reported, “almost all the mercury that people are exposed to comes from eating fish. And almost all fish contain some amounts of the metal ….”  And that “[A] 161-pound woman—the average weight of a U.S. female of childbearing age—would exceed the EPA’s exposure limit just by eating a can of tuna.”

Anyone out there in Internet Land have the inside track? Is this fishy piece of news faulty journalism or true as glue? Chime in and let us know!

The Green Quote: Emily Deschanel Speaks Up For Mother Earth In New Interview

April 30th, 2010 by Editor

“There was a study by the UN that shocked even me, a vegan for 17 years. It said the factory farm business was worse for the environment than all of transportation in the world combined—buses, trains, planes, cars, all of them. That is huge! Everyone is concerned about driving hybrid vehicles, but not many people realize that the food they eat every day is much worse for Mother Earth. Right now most of the grains grown in our country are fed to farm animals. It takes a lot more grain to feed an animal over it’s lifetime before it is killed for food, than it does to feed that grain directly to humans. Not to mention the runoff from the factories which pollute water sources, like rivers.

Also, farm animals produce 130 times more waste than humans. These are just a few reasons why being a vegan/vegetarian helps the environment, and why I encourage people to at least eat less meat. It can also help your health to become vegan. If people want more information on becoming vegetarian/vegan or eating less meat in a healthy way, check out goveg.com

-Emily Deschanelin an interview with ‘Good’ magazine about her clean, green life. We’re huge, huge fans of Deschanel and all the amazing activist work she does. She. Is. The. Real. Deal. Green food choice may not be so green

April 1st, 2010 by Editor

If everyone became vegan and so ate only fruit and vegetables, then the reduction in greenhouse emissions for the whole of food consumption would be a mere 7%. The widespread adoption of vegetarianism would have even less impact, while organic food production actually leads to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Those are the conclusions of a research paper published in the journal Progress in Industrial Ecology.
